Simon Doonan, Creative Director for Barneys New York, has just unveiled designs for one of the first holiday window displays of the season… With the tagline, “Have a foodie holiday” and paying respect to icons of gastronomy like Jean-Georges, Jaime Oliver and Julia Child, the first glimpse includes a scene created from Illy coffee packaging and accessories. Looking forward to lunch… I mean, the holiday season!
“I’m interested in the dissonance between fashion and food,” said Doonan. “Whenever we do an event, the fashion people say, ‘No food please. Let’s just serve vodka.’ But our customers are much more interested in Bobby Flay and Keith McNally than in Lindsay Lohan or the Kardashians. Chefs are definitely the new celebrities.” (via The Moment)

Racked reported this morning, “to celebrate the launch of its new Facebook page and Twitter account, Henri Bendel has installed a live model in its windows, and she’s Facebooking. That’s right: If you head up to Fifth and 56th right now, you can watch a genetically-blessed woman in a chic but nonthreatening outfit as she pokes her friends and updates her status. The display runs through next Monday concurrent with the “Bendel Girl of the Weekstakes,” which offers the chance to win a $1000 shopping spree and a Bendel’s VIP card to anyone (well, presumably anyone female) who posts a photo of herself on Bendelgirls.com. The photos also get displayed in the window, so, you know, just keep that in mind before you upload.”
While this is not my target store, I applaud the effort of Bendel´s to embrace the “modern consumer” and actually reward them with something significant for their participation!

Though a few weeks old, these window dressings at Barneys seem to continue to earn comments from related industries. LA-based window designer, Chad Michael Christian Morisette brought up the frightening similarities between his recent work for LA shop The Los Angeles Sporting Club, and Simon Doonan´s windows in NYC. Maybe it is just Halloween approaching that brings out the bloodlust in all of us.

Through July 20, the legendary NYC department Store, Bergdorf Goodman, will be hosting 11 windows exclusively with the “out of place” exhibit co-hosted by the American Visionary Art Museum. The exhibit showcases the artistry and craftwork of “real people” including doctors, engineers, and businesspeople juxtaposed with luxury apparel.

There was an interesting expose on Racked today about how Barneys in NY is preparing its windows for the holiday season. With the theme, “Have a Hippy Holiday”, Simon Doonan has orchestrated a collection of items from the late 60´s and 70´s to showcase in the famed storefront windows.
