Holiday Bargains in Retail

To the surprise of nobody, the holiday season will be ripe (and already is!) with special deals and discounts. According to Business Week, fear of the economy is turning “what once were high-end department stores into outlet-style versions of themselves and mass-market retailers into dollar stores.”

Statistics:

  • Saks Fifth Avenue- down 16.6% last month
  • Old Navy- down 20% last month
  • Neiman Marcus- down 27% last month
  • Nordstrom- down 15% last month
  • American Eagle- down 12%
  • Talbots- down 13.9%
  • Victorias Secret- down 10%

It is amazing to see all sectors of the market being drastically affected.  The flipside to this however are the deals that shoppers can find.  Examples are:

  • Victorias Secret ran a promotion for 25% off any item
  • Neiman Marcus already began their “First Call” sale (40% off)
  • Half off Laboutin shoes at Saks (at least one example cited)
  • Increased publicity for layaway programs (TJ Maxx, Burlington Coat Factory)
  • Old Navy (last weekend $1 gloves and scarves)
  • Nordstrom (coupons for spending)

If you have the money, now would be a great time to start your holiday shopping with Black Friday approaching!…
